SERIAN (March 18): Every technological advancement must begin with a strong foundation of faith and high moral values, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Premier said although artificial intelligence (AI) is based on algorithms and modern science, from an Islamic perspective, the development of technology such as AI must be guided by noble values and based on ‘hidayah’ (divine guidance) so that it is not misused to the point of having a negative impact on society.

According to him, AI is still unable to replace ‘hidayah’ that only comes from Allah SWT although AI technology is now developing rapidly and can access and translate human brain data through sophisticated algorithms.

Speaking at the Sarawak-level Nuzul Al-Quran celebration in Serian last night, he said the state also plans to develop its own AI system called DeepSar as it continues to strive not to be left behind by technological developments.

Abang Johari also reminded younger Sarawakians against misusing social media as this could be destructive to society.

He described social media as being akin to a double-edged sword and urged social media users to exercise wisdom and be mindful of others.

“It can bring benefits if used correctly, but can also destroy society if misused,” he was cited as saying in a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report.

Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar officiated at the event, which also saw the elevation of the Serian divisional mosque, which was renamed Masjid Darul Makmur.

Among those present were State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar; Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn; State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi; Deputy Minister for Modernisation of Agriculture and Regional Development II (Regional Development) Datuk Martin Ben; Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Illus; and Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin.

Around 500 guests from various ethnic and religious groups participated in the breaking of fast, before the Muslim congregation gathered for Maghrib, Isyak, and Tarawih prayers led by Grand Imam of Sarawak Datuk Mustapha
Kamal.
