KUCHING (Sept 8): Sarawak Research Society (SRS) organised a Madani Training programme titled “Sustainable Coffee Mastery – Responsible Coffee Practices” from Sept 3 to 7 to empower army veterans at the Borneo Empurau Farm and Resort in Tarat, Serian.

“This five-day training programme was specially designed for veteran army members from the Serian Division, with the aim of empowering them through knowledge and practical skills in sustainable coffee farming to enhance income generation and improve livelihood opportunities,” SRS said in a statement today.

The training was also part of its continuous efforts to support community development and socio-economic empowerment, particularly among senior citizens and retired servicemen.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Persatuan Veteran Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (PVATM), Sarawak advisor Major (Retired) Dato’ Peter Runin together with SRS Chairman Prof Dr Hiram Ting.

In their remarks, both leaders highlighted the significance of equipping veterans with sustainable agricultural practices that not only foster economic resilience but also encourage responsible environmental stewardship.

Throughout the programme, participants engaged in hands-on training, expert-led sessions and field-based activities covering responsible coffee cultivation, post-harvest processing and marketing strategies.

By the end of the training, participants expressed gratitude and confidence that the skills and knowledge gained would help them pursue sustainable coffee farming as a viable alternative source of income.

“The success of this programme reflects SRS’ strong commitment to ensuring that our veterans remain productive, empowered and well-prepared to contribute to society through sustainable practices, which is in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) Sarawak,” Ting said.

SRS added that the programme continues to serve as a platform to uplift communities by providing practical, impactful and future-oriented training opportunities.

The initiative also marks another milestone in strengthening the socio-economic well-being of Sarawak’s veteran community, while contributing to the broader development goals of the state.
