TARAT: Relief efforts at several temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in the Tarat constituency have been intensified as evacuation and monitoring efforts continue following rising water levels that affected residential areas in the Siburan district on Friday.
Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development and Tarat Assemblyman, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, conducted visits to the affected temporary evacuation centres to personally assess the situation of flood victims and the ongoing relief operations.
Dato Sri Roland Sagah began his programme with a briefing at the Siburan District Office from Serian Division Resident, Caroline Cleophas Joseph, in her capacity as Chairperson of the Serian Division Disaster Management Committee, before proceeding to inspect three operational centres in the area.
The relief centres visited were PPS Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Kerumboi, PPS Sekolah Kebangsaan St Peter Simpok and PPS Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Lintang Baru, which were opened following a rapid rise in water levels that inundated nearby settlements.
At PPS SK St Peter Simpok, a total of 24 heads of households involving 55 evacuees were recorded after the centre was opened at 3.00 am on Friday as floodwaters began to encroach into homes.
Meanwhile, PPS Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Lintang Baru accommodated 16 heads of households involving 57 evacuees who were relocated as early as 4.00 am, with the number continuing to increase as evacuation efforts remained ongoing.
As the centre reached full capacity, Dato Sri Roland directed the Division Disaster Management Committee to open an additional relief centre to accommodate affected residents.
At PPS Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Kerumboi, seven heads of households involving 28 evacuees were relocated after the centre was activated at 8.30 am to ensure the safety of residents in the affected area.
During the visits, Dato Sri Roland expressed concern for the welfare of flood victims and emphasised the importance of close coordination among all relevant agencies to ensure disaster management operations run smoothly and the needs of evacuees continue to be properly addressed.
