KUCHING (Nov 23): The discovery of a Rafflesia flower near Kampung Belimbing in Padawan is a sign of good luck for tourism growth there and other nearby villages, said Datuk Peter Minos.
In a statement, the Serian District Council (SDC) chairman said the flower, famed as the largest in the world and extremely rare, is known for its strong appeal to visitors.
“Rafflesia can draw tourists, both local and foreign. If a village develops homestays, jungle walks and cultural activities, it stands to gain significantly from tourism,” he said.
According to Minos, the discovery of the Rafflesia was discussed at an event in the village organised by the Forest Department Sarawak (FDS).
He said the flower was recently found on a mountain near Kampung Belimbing, extending towards Kampung Begu and the surrounding settlements.
Minos said the FDS has spent years searching for and studying Rafflesia species throughout the mountainous belt from Lundu to Serian due to its scientific importance and tourism value.
“Once the department completes its studies in the Kampung Belimbing area, SDC will explore ways to work with the FDS and local communities to develop tourism opportunities centred around the bloom,” he added.
Minos also thanked the Kampung Belimbing Padawan village chief and his team for facilitating discussions between the council, FDS and Felcra on the significance and potential of the world-famous ‘king of flowers’.
