Serian uncovers new majestic waterfall for tourism project

KUCHING (Nov 15): A stunning 60-metre waterfall of approximately 200-feet high, hidden deep within the mountain forests bordering Kampung Tarat Mawang in Serian, has been identified for development as a new tourism attraction.

The Serian District Council (MDS) chairman, Dato Peter Minos, said the site possesses significant potential to become a major draw for visitors.

Following a recent visit with village chiefs and local residents, Minos described the waterfall as “beautiful, majestic, and a real gem”.

He noted that the site is easily accessible, requiring only a 30-minute walk from the village’s edge.

According to Minos, the local village chiefs have formally sought the council’s assistance and are enthusiastic about transforming the waterfall into a comprehensive tourism project.

“If developed with a 10-door longhouse, a public toilet, and a canteen, the project will be a hit for tourists, even rivalling the Ranchan Waterfall,” he said in a statement.

He also highlighted the site’s exceptional natural appeal derived from its unique, secluded forest setting.

To realize this vision, MDS is currently sourcing funds for the proposed project and liaising with Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), chaired by Dato Sri Roland Sagah, whose jurisdiction covers the area.

Minos also revealed that MDS has identified a total of eight tourism-related projects in Serian, with the hope of launching them all by 2026 or 2027.

“If launched, Serian will be a great tourist destination and a heaven for tourists,” he reiterated, acknowledging the endeavour as a “really worth it, challenging and interesting” undertaking.
