KUCHING (Oct 2): The Serian District Council (MDS) is fast-tracking tourism and agriculture initiatives in line with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s aspiration of transforming Serian into the “mini New Zealand of Sarawak”.
MDS chairman Dato Peter Minos said several projects are being implemented under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency, while the Agriculture Department is collaborating with the private sector to drive growth in the farming sector.
“These projects include Panchor Dayak Hot Spring, Pesang River project, Rancang Pool Waterfall, Riih Daso Lake, Bung Sadong Hill, Silabur Cave and Geddes Gallery at Kampung Mentu Tapu.
“With agriculture and tourism working hand in hand, Serian has the potential to become the ‘mini New Zealand of Sarawak’,” he said in a statement today.
Abang Johari had first outlined the “mini New Zealand” vision when launching the Serian Convention Centre and Serian Master Plan on July 1, 2023, highlighting the division’s rich natural landscapes and the need for sustainable development.
Minos also chaired a special meeting with community leaders, reminding them of their role in supporting the council.
“As community leaders, you are the eyes and ears of the council. Report ground issues such as road conditions, grass cutting, drain cleaning and other kampung matters. If you remain silent, MDS will not know the problems and will not be able to help,” he said.
He noted that Sarawak’s wider transformation agenda includes major state projects such as a new airport, new port facilities, a state-owned airline, the coastal highway and bridges, as well as the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system.
“The Sarawak government has been supportive in creating new industries and infrastructure. All of us must take these aspirations seriously and play our part — we cannot leave everything to the government,” he said.
To strengthen grassroots cooperation, Minos proposed that MDS hold annual dialogues with community leaders to exchange ideas and provide feedback.
