Phase 2 of the RM260 million Serian water supply project is being actively implemented and expected to benefit more than 1,800 homes in 76 villages that are yet to enjoy treated water supply in the division.
The Sarawak Public Communications Unit in a report stated this high-impact project—fully funded by the Sarawak government—began in October 2024 and is expected to be completed in April 2027.
It is being implemented by the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication in collaboration with the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, who visited the Selabi Water Treatment Plant yesterday, said this project is part of the Sarawak Water Supply Grid System Plan which aims to expand coverage and resolve water supply issues comprehensively and sustainably in rural areas.
This Phase 2 project includes two main contracts, which have recorded physical progress of 19 per cent and 7.37 per cent respectively to date.
The first involves the installation of 900mm and 800mm MSCL pipes from the Selabi Water Treatment Plant to the Jalan Melikin junction involving 33km, HDPE pipes along 65km, construction of a high-level tank with a capacity of three million litres, and the connection of pipe communications to 26 villages.
The second involves the installation of MSCL pipes from the Jalan Melikin junction to the Jalan Samalatong junction along 30km, HDPE pipes along 55km, construction of a water storage tank with a capacity of 1.8 million litres, a booster pump station, and pipe connections to 50 villages.
To date, 16.5km of MSCL pipes and 9.5km of HDPE pipes have been installed under the first contract, while the second recorded the installation of 1.97km of MSCL pipes and 5.64km of HDPE pipes.
Also present during the visit were the Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Datuk Martin Ben; Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus, Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sinang Bada; and Serian Deputy Resident Abdul Khalid Manap.
